1) PURPOSE OF YOUR DECK
What you plan on using your deck for can influence the build itself. Before starting any work, consider what the purpose of the deck will be. Will it be used to entertain guests and host family BBQs or is it going to be your own personal hideaway? Of course there doesn’t have to be one, simple answer but these are important things to consider as it’ll determine the space required.
2) LOCATION
In many cases, the size of your property will dictate where you can build your deck. However, if your property is large enough to allow you to have multiple location options, you’ll need to consider which location will work best. Practical elements such as nearby entrances to your home play a crucial role in where you’ll build your deck; privacy and your property’s view will also be important.
3) DECK DESIGN
The design of your deck should match the exterior of your home to create a seamless extension. An ideal deck design is one that fits your location, shape, and budget requirements. Keep in mind that the typical rule of thumb is to make your deck less than or equal to 20% of your house’s square footage.
4) PERMITTING
Before starting your deck build, you’ll need to get all necessary permits squared away. In most cases, Vermont requires a zoning permit for any new structure built on the property. Be sure to check our permitting guide to learn more about what is required in your town.
5) ACCESSORIES
With any deck build, you’ll want to accommodate enough space for things such as seating, storage, planter boxes, lighting, and anything else you may plan on adding. Because decks can often be a place for social gathering, it’s important that any deck accessories are carefully thought out prior to and during the building process.
