Drywall Installation and Repairs

Drywall is commonly known as “Sheetrock,” but that is a brand name. The correct term is “drywall” or “gypsum board.” It takes a craftsman many years to master the hanging and taping skills necessary to make a job look great.

A drywall installation in a new space has a large visual impact on a project, allowing the things to take shape and help people envision the end result. It’s always nice when we reach this stage, but there’s still a significant amount of work to be done, including taping the joints, sanding, and priming. We also must add trim to the windows, install the doors (including casing), and put in the flooring and baseboard before painting. The heat may still need to be brought in and electricians will need to install the outlets, lights and switches.

Types of Drywall

There are several kinds to choose from, depending on the surface we are installing it on. For example, homes typically have 1/2” drywall on the ceiling and walls, while bathrooms need a moisture resistant type. The walls and ceiling in a garage adjoining the house will require 5/8” fire rated gypsum board with only one coat of joint tape (we call that fire taping). Any walls adjoining apartments will also require 5/8” fire rated drywall.
