Bathroom remodels are exciting projects that require a considerable amount of planning before work can begin. From fixtures, flooring and cabinets, to layout and spacing, a lot of work goes into these small spaces.

Bathroom Renovations: Changing the Layout

The most important decision you face is whether or not to change the layout you now have. Replacing the sink, tub and fixtures are standard, but moving them requires a lot more planning and work.

Changing the layout usually requires relocating the plumbing, which is not always easy to do. We also need to make sure gravity pulls the wastewater to the main house drain (sometimes we have to get creative to make this happen). These considerations add extra time and materials to the project, and if you want to keep costs as low as possible, plan on keeping the components where they are.

You might also be thinking about changing the dimensions of the room, maybe expanding the space a little. This calls for careful examination of the space you want to expand into, especially the framing, electrical and plumbing components in the wall that will be affected.

Other Critical Decisions

In addition to space and dimensions, you need to think about what you are replacing in the bathroom. Are you getting a new vanity, toilet and sink? Are you changing the tub into a shower stall? Do you need a new fan to bring your house up to code?

These are just a few questions that will impact your cost. Read more about other important decisions to make before remodeling a bathroom.

How Much Does a Bathroom Remodel Cost?

There are a lot of factors that impact the cost. Each component has its own price range, depending on quality and style, and labor costs depend on the size and scope of the project itself.

Prices range between $250 to $600 per square foot with most full bathroom remodels. If you keep components where they are and aim for mid-grade quality with replacement materials, you should end up on the lower range of the cost spectrum. Here is a glimpse at a few of the costs:

Demolition – Expect to pay between $800 to $3,000, depending on whether the changes are purely cosmetic or if we have to remove the walls.

Bath tubs – Tubs typically range from $300 to $1,000. Many people decide to replace their tub with a walk-in shower. We built some beautiful shower stalls with tempered glass panels and tile walls. However, you should plan to keep at least one bath tub in the house. Having a full bathroom will make your realtor, and you, very happy if you ever want to sell the house.

Toilet – You’d be surprised at the number of options available when it comes to toilets, everything from heated seats to comfort heights. You can spend as little as $150 or as much as $1,800 for a toilet that will really impress your guests and keep their buns warm.

Plumbing fixtures – Low-grade fixtures are notorious for causing leaks. This is no place for the cheap stuff. Trust us on this one – invest in quality materials and buy yourself a little peace of mind.

Vanity and Sink – Manufacturers offer packages that include vanity sinks and faucets from $350 to $850. You can also order a custom designed unit from $1,500 to $3,000.

Tile or Stone – Tile, stone and grout will cost $5 to $12 per square foot before labor to install. If you add tile to the shower area, we recommend tiling the floor as well.

Flooring – Your choices include Linoleum, tile or Marmoleum. Square foot costs for the materials only will vary from $1 to $2 for Linoleum, $4 to $5 for Marmoleum and $5 to $12 for tile. Whatever you choose, don’t go with wood or laminate flooring in the bathroom.

Setting a Timeline for Your Renovation

Good planning is key for a fast, efficient bathroom renovation. We make sure all materials have arrived before starting work, so you don’t have to worry about unnecessary delays. We will schedule our plumbers and electricians to come the day after the demolition, ready to work their magic.

If all aspects of the job are well planned and no unexpected problems pop up, your bathroom remodel could take as little as one or two weeks. More complicated projects could take as many as five weeks, and there is always a chance we will find rot as we pull out old material, especially when removing the bathtub or toilet. This usually sets the project back just a few hours.

Bathroom remodels are complex jobs, but they don’t have to be overwhelming for you. If you reach out to us with a sense of what you want, we can get you into a gorgeous new bathroom that much quicker.
